Sulphide precipitation processes for metal removal and recovery

BioteQ specializes in the removal and recovery of dissolved metals from wastewater using innovative sulphide precipitation processes that produce a solid metal product that can be recycled into useful products, and clean water that can be safely discharged to the environment.

Sulphide (in the form of H2S or NaHS) is added to contaminated water. The conditions are adjusted so that individual metals can be selectively precipitated, forming high-grade solid metal-sulphides. The treated water is separated from the metal solids, and can be released directly to the environment, or re-used in the mining process.

BioteQ has developed two proprietary processes. Click here to see our Case Studies.

  • BioSulphide® process – this patented technology uses biogenically produced hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S) to selectively recover or remove dissolved metals from water.
  • ChemSulphide® process – this patented technology uses chemical sulphide to selectively recover or remove dissolved metals from water.

Both processes produce a high-grade, saleable metal sulphide product that can be shipped to a refinery where it can be converted into useful products, and treated water that can be re-used or safely discharged to the environment.

Metals recovered for sale include copper, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, rhenium, vanadium, and zinc.

Other metals that can be toxic or create process concerns can also be removed, including antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, lead, manganese, mercury, selenium, and strontium.

Applications:

Sulphide precipitation is best suited for applications where there are large flows of water that have relatively low concentrations of dissolved metals. These are typically found in the following applications:

Mining Power Generation Oil & Gas

Benefits of Sulphide Precipitation:

  • Produces clean water that meets very strict water quality regulations for discharge to the environment.
  • Maximizes resource recovery by producing saleable high-grade metal products suitable for refining.
  • Generate revenue from the sale of metals that offsets the cost for water treatment.
  • Reduces or eliminates the production of residual waste sludge, and the associated costs of sludge storage and environmental monitoring.
  • Reduces the life cycle cost for water treatment because of lower capital and operating costs, lower costs for waste disposal, reduced environmental liabilities, and an incremental source of revenue.
